  1. The University of Tokyo

Japan Student Visa

Following are the brief requirements for student visa required to study in Japan:

  • Certificate of eligibility – the university that accept your admission will provide you this certificate.
  • Visa Application – apply for visa at Japanese consulate in your country or Japanese embassy. You will be required to fill your details in visa application form.
  • Documents required – valid passport, completed visa application form, certificate of eligibility, financial statements showing availability of sufficient funds to finance your studies and living in Japan and recent passport size photographs.

Can you work in Japan on student Visa?

The answer is Yes, but you will require a permission from immigration bureau. You will be given permission to work maximum 28 hours a week only during term time while eight hours daily during official holiday periods.

Cost of Studying in Japan

Tuition fees in Japan are less compared to universities in UK and USA. On average, tuition fees are between ¥500,000 and ¥1,000,000 annually, plus admission and exam fees. Admission fees are approximately ¥280,000 and Exam fees are between ¥17,000 and ¥30,000.

Japanese government is encouraging influx of more international students in Japan; therefore, more scholarships are introduced in Japan recently. Public as well as private universities are offering different scholarship and you can get in touch with your respective university to check your eligibility before applying.

Living costs depends on if you are living in a big city or a small town or city. On average, keep in mind expenses of ¥90,000 monthly, which accounts for groceries, travelling and accommodation. You will also be required to enroll in National health insurance system, which will cost you approximately ¥23,500 annually.

  • Short-term study programs are exchange programs having less than a year duration. Scholarships for International Students in Japan

MEXT Scholarship

Government funded scholarship, ministry of education, sports, science and technology (MEXT) offers this scholarship for a study period of one year in designated universities. This is introduced to promote knowledge of Japanese culture and language.

MEXT accepts large number of international students every year and its aim is to deepen friendship between Japan and rest of the world by contributing in development of trained human resource.

DOCOMO International Student Scholarship

A fully funded scholarship program for international students, which is JEES Sponsor – Crowned Scholarship. It allows Maters’ degree in communication technology and information processing in selected universities.

Rotary Peace Fellowships

A fully funded scholarship program for international students in University of North Carolina, International Christian University, Duke University, Uppsala University and University of Queensland. It is offered for masters’ programs in peace studies and conflict resolution.

More than 140,000 students from all over the world are studying at various institutes in Japan. As a tolerant country, Japan has freedom of religious thoughts, which is mentioned in Japanese constitution.
