The martyrdom of rebel commander Burhan Wani in July 2016 has given boost to a rather new trend of recruitment for the separatist movement groups struggling in Kashmir. The influx of youth willing to join the effort has increased. A youngster named Waseem Khanday snatched the weapon from a lawmaker’s personal security guard and went on to join Hizbul Mujahideen. Youngsters like Khanday and Dar belong the new crop of youngsters who have joined the struggle during the turmoil which began after Burhan – also dubbed as the ‘new age’ of Kashmir rebellion. The recent events including abusive assault of Kashmiri students by the Indian forces in order to get them to chant antiPakistani slogans and use of human shield – a serious violation of human rights – as a defense against pebbles that are thrown towards them as an expression of hatred from the local populace.

The recent attack at an Indian army camp in Kupwara district of Kashmir has come out as a retaliation of the Indian brutal policy adopted for Kashmiri populace. This is the second major attack on Indian forces in a week. The previous one claimed lives of 25 CRPF personnel Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district.
The New Kashmir Wave
These incidents indicate that many youngsters now see picking up guns as the only solution. The reason given by them is that whether people protest peacefully or violently, the (Indian) government’s response remains the same: using maximum force to quell any kind of dissent.
Thrashing Kashmiri students’ football team for wearing green uniform and the retaliatory step taken by Indian authorities to arrest DeM leader Asiya Andrabi seems like a desperate and ruthless attempt of the Indian government to curb the freedom movement. However, as many Indian analysts also believe, India has lost grip over the control of Kashmiri populace and the tyrant policies as well as actions of Indian presence in Kashmir is further sabotaging the situation. Pakistan, at this crucial time, can utilize this uproar in creating a counter narrative of India’s claim over IoK and convince the international community – attracting UN attention towards inhumane treatment of Kashmiris fighting for the right of self-determination.
